5 dead in Las Vegas: Shooter takes his own life

According to police, four women and one man have died in a bloody attack in two apartments in Las Vegas in the US state of Nevada. 

The victims were found in two apartments in the north of the city. Investigators also came across a 13-year-old girl at one of the crime scenes who was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound.

The suspected shooter was initially on the run. On Tuesday, the 47-year-old man was spotted in Las Vegas and surrounded by officers. According to the police report, he ignored requests to put down his weapon. He had taken his own life.

Firearms are readily available in the USA and are in circulation on a massive scale. Attacks with many victims regularly shake the country - for example at schools, supermarkets, nightclubs or large events. However, private disputes, police checks and disputes between criminals and gangs also end fatally far more often than in other countries because so many people carry guns in the USA.

According to calculations based on data from the US Department of Health and Human Services, on average, one person in the United States dies every eleven minutes from gun violence.
