Germans celebrate us for “hottest game of the EM!”

Group winners! Thanks to the crazy 3:2 victory against the Netherlands, Austria's national soccer team finishes the group stage with the most points on the board. The fans are ecstatic - and even our German neighbors are raving about the "hottest game of the European Championships".

This was the title of the German newspaper "Bild" on Tuesday evening. The game was certainly not for the faint-hearted.

The Austrians had taken an early lead through an own goal by Donyell Malen (6th), before his compatriot Cody Gakpo equalized in the 47th minute.

Rangnick's side responded promptly, Romano Schmid heading Red-White-Red back into the lead twelve minutes later.

However, this did not last long, as Memphis Depay drew the scores level again in the 75th minute.

However, the ÖFB team had the last word in the person of Marcel Sabitzer (80th), who finally brought the Berlin Olympic Stadium to life a quarter of an hour before the final whistle.

"What a wild kick", said the European Championship host nation, taking its hat off to Austria's soccer heroes, who will now play in the quarter-finals in Leipzig next Tuesday.

Which team red-white-red will then face will be decided on Wednesday evening: Turkey, the Czech Republic and Georgia will battle it out for second place behind the Portuguese, who have already secured victory in Group F.
