Explosion in Bolzano factory: seriously injured worker dead

One of the six seriously injured workers (31) died in hospital in Verona after the explosion in a warehouse near the "aluminum" factory founded in 1936 in Bolzano, South Tyrol, on Friday night. 

The Senegalese was flown by helicopter to Verona after the explosion, where he succumbed to his severe burns on Saturday evening.

Four seriously injured people were taken by helicopter to hospitals in Padua, Verona and Murnau in Bavaria after the explosion. The less seriously injured were treated in Bolzano.

Workers were engulfed by flames
The explosion occurred about half an hour after midnight on Friday in the warehouse of the factory, which is located in the Bolzano industrial zone. Some workers were caught in the flames. According to an uninjured worker, the explosion occurred in one of the aluminum melting rooms. 

Building confiscated
The cause is not yet known, but according to media reports, it occurred during the casting and cooling phase of molten aluminum. The public prosecutor's office began an investigation. The building was confiscated by order of the judicial authorities.
