Dortmund: After Terzic, world champion must also leave

He was a world champion and was voted into the All-Star team of the past Champions League season - but now it's time for defensive star Mats Hummels to leave Borussia Dortmund.

Following the sacking of coach Edin Terzic - sportkrone.at reported - the 35-year-old is now leaving BVB as a club icon. At least that's what the "Ruhr Nachrichten" reported on Thursday afternoon.

The long-serving defender, who was in (old) top form last season but was not nominated for the European Championship in his home country, is not expected to receive a new contract offer and will therefore leave the club on a free transfer. This is the result of the Dortmund bosses' major analysis of the season.

Dispute with Terzic
Hummels has often clashed with coach Terzic in recent months and criticized him in an interview before the Champions League final against Real Madrid (0:2).

After Terzic's departure from BVB, there was speculation that the 35-year-old world champion would extend his contract with Dortmund after all. However, the club has now apparently decided to dispense with the services of the controversial central defender.
