Problem wolves are to be dealt with

The province of Salzburg is introducing a new ordinance on how to deal with wolves. To protect against the EU-wide protected predator, pasture protection areas are to be designated for the first time - because experts believe that herd protection measures are unreasonable or disproportionate there. What does this mean in concrete terms?

 According to the new regulation, problem wolves can be shot in the protected areas without prior individual assessment.

As reported, the first wolf kills of the year are likely to have occurred recently on a communal alpine pasture in Rauris. The alpine farmers found eight dead sheep. Four animals are injured, four more cannot be found. Everything points to the work of a wolf. However, the results of the DNA analysis are still pending.
