Rocket physicist sentenced to prison in Russia

Russian physicist Anatoly Maslov was sentenced to 14 years in prison for espionage by a court in St. Petersburg on Tuesday. The 77-year-old must serve his sentence in a penal colony. 

Maslow is one of a whole series of important scientists who have been charged with treason in Russia in recent years. Maslow has protested his innocence. He worked in the field of hypersonic missiles.

The newspaper Kommersant had reported that Maslow was accused of passing on confidential information to the German secret service. Together with other scientists, the physicist had conducted research in areas that are important for the development of hypersonic missiles.

Such missiles are ultra-modern weapons that can transport their payload at up to ten times the speed of sound and thus break through air defense systems. Kinschal" hypersonic missiles have already been used by the Russian armed forces in Ukraine, but were intercepted there by Ukrainian units.
