Swimming ban imposed
Shark on Menorca had swimmers in its sights
There is currently a fear of a shark on the Spanish vacation island of Menorca. After its sighting, swimmers had to get out of the sea immediately. There is an absolute swimming ban.
Beautiful nature, turquoise blue sea - the beach of Arenal d'en Castel on Menorca is considered an absolute vacation paradise. However, a blue shark is currently wreaking havoc on the Balearic island. According to the authorities, the predatory fish was swimming in the bay and suddenly swam towards the bathers.
The lifeguards raised the alarm at around 15:30 on Monday and hoisted the red flag - an absolute swimming ban was imposed, reports Menorca.Info. The beach section had to be closed and the emergency number 112 was dialed.
Shark sometimes makes "exploratory bites"
Due to its blue camouflage, the blue shark is difficult to spot in the sea despite its impressive size. It is considered to be very active and voracious. Its diet consists mainly of fish and squid. It poses no immediate threat to us humans. However, it has poor eyesight and is therefore known for occasional "exploratory bites".
What should I do if I encounter a shark?
- Keep calm
- Avoid hasty movements
- Follow the instructions of lifeguards
Also present in the Mediterranean
Blue sharks are usually found in open, tropical waters. However, they do occasionally enter the Mediterranean. There are repeated sightings of sharks off the Spanish coast. Why this is the case has not yet been clarified.
