Export surplus
Austrians consumed less electricity and gas
Austria consumed less gas and electricity in winter 2023/24 than in the previous year. This is according to data from the energy regulator E-Control. At the same time, a small surplus in electricity exports was achieved.
A decrease in consumption and a higher feed-in of electricity into the public grid contributed to this (plus 18%). Over the winter, 33.7 billion KWh of electricity was fed into the grid in Austria, more than half of which came from hydropower plants (51%), with some from wind power plants (17%) and thermal power plants (13%).
Generation from thermal power plants was reduced in March 2024. They only produced ten percent of electricity, hydroelectric power plants half and wind power plants contributed 18.6 percent. Photovoltaics accounted for eleven percent of final consumption. However, much of this was not fed into the public grid, according to E-Control.
Storage facilities three quarters full
At the end of March, at the end of the winter, the storage facilities were around three quarters full and therefore significantly better than a year ago. Electricity consumption fell by 1.3 percent in winter 2023/24, while gas consumption fell by seven percent.
