The University of California returned to in-person classes on Monday following the pro-Palestine protests. However, police forces are still on campus. The security measures urgently need to be changed, said Rector Gene D. Block.

A new unit should be exclusively responsible for security on the university campus. The former chief of the Sacramento Police Department has been appointed to head it. "The campus will return to regular operations and plans to remain so for the remainder of the week," the university said in a statement.

As reported, the pro-Palestinian protests at US universities began in mid-April at the renowned Columbia University in New York. They had spread to at least 30 other universities in the country (see video above).

Anti-Semitic incidents
On the one hand, the demonstrators denounced the high number of deaths in the Gaza Strip. They also called on university administrations to end links with companies that have connections to Israel. There were also repeated anti-Semitic incidents.

On Thursday, police cleared a protest camp in Los Angeles and arrested more than 200 protesters. On Friday, the university in California then announced the temporary switch to online operations.
