Kilometer-long traffic jam
Inntal highway had to be closed due to oil spill
Traffic chaos early Monday morning on the Inntal highway in Tyrol! Near Wattens (Innsbruck-Land district), a truck left behind a trail of fuel that had to be cleaned up immediately by the fire department. The A12 therefore had to be completely closed in the direction of Kufstein. The result was a traffic jam around ten kilometers long.
Patience was required from around 6.30 a.m. on Monday on the Inntal freeway from Innsbruck in the direction of Kufstein. Shortly after the Wattens exit, a truck - driven by a 52-year-old Austrian - leaked hundreds of liters of diesel due to a ruptured tank. "On the approach road, the driver heard a muffled bang and stopped the truck on the hard shoulder. When he checked the truck, he discovered that the diesel tank was damaged and leaking diesel," the police said
Delays even with alternative routes
A large contingent of firefighters, police and ASFINAG immediately deployed. In order to clean up the fuel spill, the highway towards Germany had to be completely closed. Cars were diverted at Wattens, but there was still a traffic jam up to Hall-West. Naturally, there were also some delays in the Wattens area. After around two hours, both lanes could be reopened.
