"A multitude of ailments"
Harvey Weinstein (72) has been admitted to hospital
Former film mogul Harvey Weinstein (72), who is in prison for sexual offenses, is being treated in a New York hospital, according to his spokesperson and legal team.
His transfer from a prison in upstate New York to the New York metropolis has led to problems that now need to be monitored by doctors.
Weinstein has high blood pressure, heart disease and "a variety" of other health problems.
Sentence surprisingly overturned
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexual offenses in 2020. Last Thursday, an appeals court in New York surprisingly overturned the conviction.
The Weinstein affair or #metoo
The first Weinstein trial marked a milestone in legal history. At the time, the case was a major catalyst for the #MeToo movement.
Since 2017, more than 80 women have publicly accused Weinstein of sexual assault. The ex-producer has always denied any guilt and claimed that sexual acts were consensual.
By a narrow majority, the panel found that procedural errors were made during the trial at the time. Weinstein is still in custody, however. In a second criminal trial in Los Angeles, which also involved sexual offenses, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2023.
A hearing is scheduled for May 1 in Manhattan court. Weinstein was transferred to New York's Rikers Island prison following the judge's ruling on Thursday. He is now being treated at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.
