Austria's national women's ice hockey team has brought the home World Championship in Klagenfurt to a conciliatory close with a win. In a 6:5 (2:2,3:1,0:2,1:0) overtime win against fifth-placed Netherlands, Alexander Bröms' team claimed their third success in their fifth game. Promotion from Division 1A, which was achieved by Norway (12 points) and Hungary (11), was no longer possible for the fourth-placed Austrians (7).
Annika Fazokas - the player of the tournament with nine points as a defender - scored in the third minute of overtime to secure victory after her team had given away a 5:3 lead in the final period. Indiscipline with 4:18 minutes to go meant that the score was 4:5 when they were short-handed, and 25 seconds before the end a 4:6 situation resulted in a 5:5 draw.
After eight minutes, Emma Hofbauer (5th) and Laura Lüftenegger (7th) had made up for a capital false start with a goal after ten seconds. In the second period, the Austrians scored within four minutes through North American pro Theresa Schafzahl (31st, 34th) and Karolina Hengelmüller (33rd) to make it 5:3. With 20 goals scored, the Austrians were number one in the group, but they also conceded 15 goals (4th). "Defending leads is definitely something we need to work on for the future," said captain Anna Meixner on ORF.
