Association bows out
Swedish soccer opposes video evidence
After persistent opposition from fans and clubs, Sweden has decided against the introduction of video evidence in soccer. 18 out of 32 of the top clubs in the league association have now spoken out against VAR, Swedish association boss Fredrik Reinfeldt told the newspaper "Aftonbladet". The association will bow to this majority. Reinfeldt added that he did not expect this position to change in the future.
There had previously been talks with the European Football Union (UEFA) about whether Sweden would be obliged to introduce the controversial video evidence. "I don't expect that. It is therefore up to us to make the decision," said Reinfeldt.
Democratic rules followed
The VAR has long met with resistance in Sweden, which has tended to increase in recent months. Last year, Reinfeldt had said that video evidence was the future of Swedish soccer. However, he would bow to the democratic rules of the game, the head of the association now said.
