Several dead in floods in China

In southern China, more than 110,000 people have now been evacuated due to flooding.(Bild: AFP)

At least four people have died in heavy flooding in southern China. Ten more people were still being searched for on Monday. State media reported the threat of a flood of the century.

Days of heavy rain had led to rising rivers in large parts of Guangdong province and caused a bridge to collapse (see video above). In total, more than 110,000 people were brought to safety by the masses of water. However, according to the state news agency Xinhua, help came too late for four people - they died in the flood. A search was still underway on Monday for ten more people.

Warning of strong winds
The rain is not letting up on Monday. Floods of up to 5.8 meters above the alarm level were expected on rivers in the Per River Delta on Monday morning. The Chinese weather service also warned of thunderstorms and strong winds in the coastal regions off Guangdong. These include major cities such as Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

Landslides were already reported from another city - Jiangwan - on Sunday. At least six people were injured. In recent years, China has repeatedly experienced severe flooding, devastating droughts and record heat. Weather events are generally becoming more frequent and more intense.
