TikTok sees freedom of expression at risk in the USA

TikTok has criticized a possible ban on the video platform in the USA. Should such a law be passed, the right to freedom of expression of 170 million Americans would be trampled underfoot, TikTok announced on Sunday.

On Saturday, the US House of Representatives gave TikTok an ultimatum to break away from its Chinese parent company ByteDance. If this does not happen, TikTok will be banned from the Apple and Google app stores in the USA, according to the bill. The Senate still has to approve it before it can come into force.

Critics of TikTok accuse the platform of being close to the Chinese government and possible data espionage. TikTok rejects all accusations. It is unclear whether the government in Beijing would agree to a sale of the US share. The app is particularly popular with young people. The dispute has become an important issue in the US election campaign.
