Bulgaria: Customs officers find 400 kg of heroin from Iran
Bulgarian customs officers have seized around 400 kilograms of heroin from Iran in a Turkish truck at the EU's external border with Turkey. The drugs, worth 8.5 million euros, were hidden in 156 mattresses.
As the main customs office in Sofia announced on Saturday, the heroin was destined for an EU country. The find had already been made last Wednesday during a customs check at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing. The drugs were hidden in 618 packages in 156 mattresses.
The 63-year-old Turkish driver of the truck was arrested. He is reportedly facing up to 20 years in prison.
As recently as March, Bulgarian customs officers discovered around 170 kilograms of cocaine among bananas from Ecuador at the port of the Black Sea city of Burgas. The ship carrying the bananas had reportedly come to Bulgaria from Ecuador via Panama, Malta and Italy.
