Drunk driver crashes into birthday party – 2 children dead
Drama at a children's birthday party in the USA: A young brother and sister were killed on Saturday afternoon when a driver crashed her car into a boat club on Lake Erie in the state of Michigan.
The eight-year-old and her five-year-old brother died at the scene of the accident, as several US media reported on Sunday (local time), citing the police. Nine people were taken to nearby hospitals with life-threatening injuries, including three children. Helicopters were also deployed.
Driver was drunk - arrested by police
The 66-year-old driver of the car was arrested. She is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle drove a good 7.5 meters into the Swan Boat Club building before coming to a standstill, US media report.
First responders described the scenes at the scene as "extremely chaotic, with a high level of emotion". It was initially unclear how many people were in the boat club on Lake Erie, around 50 kilometers south of Detroit in the state of Michigan.
"Please keep all those affected in your thoughts and prayers. We thank everyone for their condolences and prayers," the boat club wrote on its Facebook page (see post above).
