Who is to blame?
U2 collision continues to pose a mystery
The shock after the crash of a U2 train full of passengers runs deep. The causes and consequences are currently being analyzed.
A serious accident occurred on Friday evening at around 7.30 pm at the Schottentor U2 station. An incoming subway train collided with a construction vehicle, a so-called rail-bound construction trailer.
A stroke of luck: according to the fire department, the U2 was traveling at low speed and there were relatively few passengers in the Silver Arrow's carriages. According to a spokeswoman for Wiener Linien, there were probably 120 passengers. Although the driver immediately initiated an emergency braking maneuver, the crash could not be prevented and six people were slightly injured.
How could this happen?
The collision was caused by the construction trailer that had fallen onto the tracks. How exactly this could have happened - whether human or technical error - will be clarified over the next few days.
The incident on the U2 is an absolutely unique case that is currently being analyzed and investigated in detail.

No details yet
However, the accident will definitely have consequences, at least financial ones. Wiener Linien does not want to give any precise details at the moment. Just this much: "The train has been taken to the workshop."
The construction of the new U5 line and the extension of the U2 are Wiener Linien's prestige project. Construction work started in mid-2021 - since then, the U2 line has not been running between Karlsplatz and Schottentor. The purple line is due to run along the entire route again at the start of school in September. The first section of the U5 will go into operation in 2026.
