For years, Mazda was considered a specialist for small, compact and medium-sized vehicles. Now, after the CX-60, they are launching an even larger sister model. The Mazda CX-80 is based on the same platform and also celebrates the six-cylinder diesel.

Many brand fans were wide-eyed when Mazda presented the CX-60, a crossover measuring 4.75 meters in length and thus a new top-of-the-range model for Europe, almost two years ago. Now the Japanese have gone one better - by exactly 25 centimetres in length and wheelbase and 2.4 centimetres in height.

CX-80 is the name of the new, powerful brand flagship, which is also based on the "Skyactive Multi-Solution Scalable Architecure" platform for vehicles with longitudinally mounted drive systems. With a base price of around 60,000, it will be around 7000 euros more expensive than its smaller sister model.

Plug-in hybrid not up to date
Two drive systems are available for the CX-80, both of which are familiar from the 60 series and both of which feature all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. The plug-in hybrid combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 192 hp and an electric motor with 129 kW/175 hp to produce a system output of 327 hp. However, the purely electric range of the plug-in, which weighs over 2.2 tons, is no longer quite up to date at 60 kilometers.

The second engine is the 3.3-liter diesel. The six-cylinder engine, developed by Mazda specifically for the large model series, is supported by a 48-volt mild hybrid system and has an output of 254 hp with a standard consumption of 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. Unlike in the CX-60, the same engine with a throttled output of 200 hp and rear-wheel drive will not be used in the CX-80, at least not initially.

Storage space is also even more generous in the new, 4.95 meter long top-of-the-range model. With all three rows of seats in place, the trunk capacity is only a comparatively modest 285 liters, including a compartment in the loading floor. However, if the third-row seats are folded down, a large space of 687 liters is created. If the second row of seats is also folded down, 1221 liters are available when loaded up to the height of the windows. And if the CX-80 is loaded right up to the roof, the volume increases to a generous 1971 liters, an increase of around 250 liters compared to the CX-60.

Seven seats as standard
Compared to the CX-60, the additional space benefits the rear in particular. The CX-80 always comes with three rows of seats in a 2-3-2 arrangement. If you opt for one of the higher of a total of five equipment levels, Homura or Homura Plus, you can swap the middle 3-seater bench for two comfortable individual seats at no extra cost.

In addition, the second row of seats can be moved by up to twelve centimetres and the backrest angle can be adjusted from 15 to 33 degrees. The backrests can be folded down at the touch of a button.

Otherwise, the vehicle's equipment is largely identical to the smaller model. Highlights include the head-up display, the large panoramic roof, Alexa voice control, four-zone automatic air conditioning and the Driver Personalization System, in which a camera recognizes the driver and automatically adjusts the seat position, steering wheel position, exterior mirrors, head-up display and climate and sound settings. There are also practical USB-C ports in all three rows of seats.

Market launch in Austria in the fall.
