In just under a week's time, one of the biggest running events in the country will be taking place again. We are talking about the Vienna City Marathon. Young and old will meet in Vienna on April 21 and attempt to complete the 42.195 kilometers across the capital. The "Krone" is giving away vouchers for weekend breaks at Austria Trend Hotels and Bassena Hotels worth 500 euros each.

For years, the Vienna City Marathon has been the running event that tens of thousands of running enthusiasts have been waiting for. But the Vienna City Marathon is much more than just a marathon, it also offers a wide range of activities throughout the weekend.

Broad supporting program for young and old
With the Inclusion Run, the two children's runs and, since last year, the Vienna 5K over 5 kilometers, there is a wide range of running competitions for young and old. The whole spectacle takes place in condensed form on the Ringstrasse.

There will also be entertainment for children away from the popular races, in which whole school classes will once again be taking part this year. For example, on Saturday, April 20, there will be a children's program by Radio Wien with Rolf Rüdiger on Rathausplatz. The 5K run with its generous time limit is ideal for beginners, as you can run or walk it, chat or try to achieve a top time, or simply enjoy the Ringstrasse.

Top athletes at the start
The top marathon athletes will have little time for this on Sunday. Julia Mayer, for example. The high-flyer showed herself to be in brilliant form yesterday, 16 days before her start at the Vienna City Marathon. At a 10 km race in Paris, Mayer beat her own Austrian record of 32:49 minutes to 32:28.

But the men's race will also be fast. A tight field of over 30 runners with best times of 2:15 hours or faster promises an attractive race for the fans and a strong field for the Austrian top runners Peter Herzog and Mario Bauernfeind. The German Erik Hille wants to improve his time of 2:14:18 and make common cause with the Austrian top runners. Tiidrek Nurme from Estonia with a best time of 2:10:02 and Daviti Kharazushvili from Georgia with 2:11:30 are the other strong European runners at the start. Levente Szemeri leads the field at the Hungarian championships with a best time of 2:15:32.

One of the top favorites is the 26-year-old Ethiopian Regasa. He ran 2:06:11 on his marathon debut in Rotterdam 2023 and finished fifth. The VCM will be his second marathon. Regasa has great potential, as he has a considerable range of top performances. His best time in the half marathon is 59:10 minutes (Barcelona 2022) and he clocked 27:23 minutes in the 10 km road race. He also achieved strong times on the track with 13:06.98 minutes over 5,000 m and 3:34.57 minutes over 1,500 m.
