Dramatic scenes unfolded in a house in Flaurling in the Tyrolean Oberland on Tuesday night: the 55-year-old occupant was woken by the smell of burning and finally noticed that a fire had broken out in the living room where her bedridden husband (75) was lying on the stove bench. The man suffered severe burns and was rescued outside by his wife.

The fire broke out in the detached house in Flaurling at around 0.30 am. The 55-year-old woman was woken from her sleep by the smell of burning. When she immediately went to check what was wrong, "she noticed a fire in the living room next to her bedridden husband lying on the stove bench", reported the police.

The 55-year-old took the man outside and made an emergency call.

Quick-witted, the woman grabbed the 75-year-old and rescued him outside. There she immediately made an emergency call, the investigators added.

Severe burns, smoke inhalation
The local woman probably saved her husband's life. "The 55-year-old suffered smoke inhalation, the man suffered severe burns to his arm and also smoke inhalation," said the police. Both were taken to Innsbruck Hospital by ambulance.

The alerted fire department was able to quickly bring the fire under control and extinguish it. Massive damage was caused to the house. The cause of the fire is still unclear and under investigation.
