Emergency operation in Berlin
Worries about Olympic champion: “Was life-threatening”
Two-time Olympic track cycling champion Kristina Vogel was lucky to survive a pulmonary embolism on Saturday. The situation had become "life-threatening", explained the German. After an emergency operation, however, she is now on the road to recovery.
"I had so many thrombi in my lungs that the heart pressure had already risen and it became life-threatening," the 33-year-old shared on Instagram. On Saturday night, she was admitted to a hospital in Berlin with a high pulse rate and shortness of breath.
The former track cyclist emphasizes that she was lucky: "One more day at home would probably have been my last." After an emergency operation, her condition stabilized again. The German has since been able to leave the intensive care unit.
It is the next chapter in the 33-year-old's tale of woe. She has been confined to a wheelchair since an accident. While training on a concrete track in Cottbus in 2018, Vogel collided with a junior rider at a speed of around 60 kilometers per hour. She had to undergo several operations on her spine. Vogel has been paraplegic ever since.
