Shot at camerawoman
After “Rust” drama: prison sentence for armorer
Gun master Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter. She was responsible for gun safety on the set of the western "Rust" starring Alec Baldwin when a camerawoman was fatally injured. The court in Santa Fe in the US state of New Mexico announced the sentence on Monday. It is the maximum sentence.
The public prosecutor's office had asked the judge to impose the full sentence in the run-up to the announcement. The defense sought to have the sentence suspended on probation.
Conviction already in March
Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty by a jury in Santa Fe court at the beginning of March. The incident took place in October 2021 on the set of the western "Rust" with Alec Baldwin as the lead actor and co-producer of the film.
During rehearsals at Bonanza Creek Ranch, 42-year-old camerawoman Halyna Hutchins was fatally injured when a shot was fired from a prop gun operated by Baldwin. Director Joel Souza was hit in the shoulder by the same bullet.
The young gunsmith had loaded the revolver, which was then handed to Baldwin.
A trial against the 66-year-old Hollywood star for involuntary manslaughter is scheduled for July. Both had repeatedly denied responsibility for the incident.
