People attacked in Sydney shopping center
Several people were stabbed in a shopping center in Sydney on Saturday afternoon (local time). Six were killed. The suspected perpetrator was shot and fatally injured by police.
The incident took place at around 3.40 p.m. local time on Saturday at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center in the Australian metropolis of Sydney. According to reports, a man attacked around nine people with a knife. Six were killed, most recently the mother of an injured toddler. Seven other people were injured.
Policewoman caught the perpetrator
A policewoman was able to confront the perpetrator and shot him; he succumbed to his injuries. "If she hadn't done that, he would have carried on. He ran amok", said one witness. Eyewitnesses reported that they had barricaded themselves in stores. Dozens of rescue workers treated the injured at the scene. Several were taken to hospital, including a nine-month-old baby.
No terrorist background
Hundreds of people were evacuated from the shopping center. A large-scale police operation was underway. The police have currently ruled out a terrorist background. "Tragically, numerous fatalities have been reported and the first thoughts of all Australians are with those affected and their loved ones," wrote Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on X.

He asked people to refrain from speculation and let the investigators work in peace. The attacker had no accomplices. No details of the identity or a possible motive were initially given. The police called on the public to avoid the area. There is now said to be no further danger.
