Driver deceased, pregnant woman taken to hospital by helicopter

One fatality and four injuries - that is the tragic result of a collision at a junction in Altenfelden (Upper Austria) on Friday. A pregnant woman (29) had to be flown to hospital by rescue helicopter afterwards.

A 77-year-old man from Mühlviertel was trapped in his car as a result of the crash and had to be cut out of the wreckage by the fire department - he did not survive the accident.

A 29-year-old woman from the Rohrbach district survived - however, the pregnant woman had to be flown to hospital by rescue helicopter.

Car with right of way overlooked
The accident happened in the midday hours at the junction of the Böhmerwald Landesstraße and the B 127 in Altenfelden. According to the police, the 77-year-old driver may have overlooked a car driving on the priority road when turning.

In addition to the pregnant woman, the 23-year-old driver and his passenger (20) and a 25-year-old (all from the Rohrbach district) were also in the car. These three other occupants were also injured and were taken to hospital in Rohrbach by the ambulance service.

"Were able to get out independently"
"We immediately rescued one person from the vehicle using rescue equipment", reported the Altenfelden volunteer fire department after the operation. They continued: "The occupants of the second car were able to get out independently and were looked after by the Red Cross."

Traffic had to be diverted for the duration of the clean-up operation.
