US police officers fired 96 times at motorists
Images from officers' bodycams shed new light on a traffic stop that got out of hand: US police shot a motorist 96 times.
Bright excitement in the United States of America! Newly released videos of a police operation on March 21 in the Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago show officers shooting at motorist Dexter Reed a staggering 96 times in 41 seconds.
An initial investigation into the shooting, which got completely out of hand, concluded that the 26-year-old driver opened fire on the officers first. Now, however, the bereaved family and their lawyers are initiating a public debate as to why civilian officers with guns drawn first forced their way into the basketball fan's car and fired 96 shots at him.
Not identified as officers?
The images from the officers' bodycams raise more questions than they answer. According to the victim's lawyer, it is not clear that the civilian officers had identified themselves as such before they fired. Several authorities are analyzing the case again and want to clarify whether the officers' actions were justified.
