War material for Ukraine worth 138 million dollars

The US government has approved the sale of urgently needed military equipment worth 138 million dollars (around €127 million) to Ukraine. The material will be used to repair and upgrade the Hawk air defense system and will improve the protection of the population and important infrastructure.

The USA has already provided Ukraine with several air defense systems, including US-made Patriot batteries and older Hawk-type devices. This has significantly improved Ukraine's air defense, which at the time of the Russian invasion more than two years ago consisted largely of Soviet-era aircraft and missile systems.

The now approved sale "will not change the basic military balance in the region", explained the Department for International Security Cooperation (DSCA) on Tuesday (local time). However, Kiev must expand its defense capabilities against Russian missile attacks, the DSCA added.

USA as the most important supporter
The USA has been Kiev's most important military supporter since the Russian invasion in February 2022. However, opposition Republicans in Congress have been blocking a new aid package worth 60 billion dollars for months under pressure from former President Donald Trump, who wants to run for re-election in November. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi warned last weekend that his country would face defeat in the war against Russia if Congress did not approve further aid.
