Man (52) executed by lethal injection in the USA
A 52-year-old man was executed by lethal injection in the US state of Missouri on Tuesday evening. The man was sentenced to death in 2006 for the murder of his cousin and her husband. Legal efforts by his lawyers to prevent the execution had failed.
The 52-year-old was killed by lethal injection in Bonne Terre prison on Tuesday, as US media reported, citing the responsible authorities.
Prisoner showed remorse before execution
The media also reported that the man had shown remorse and that numerous prison officials had even spoken out in favor of a life sentence as a result.
Five people already executed in 2024
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, five people have been executed in the USA this year, compared to 25 last year. More than 2,300 criminals sentenced to death are currently on death row, some of whom have been there for decades.
New method of killing using nitrogen
In January, a person sentenced to death was killed for the first time using a new nitrogen method. During the procedure, a person is injected with nitrogen via a face mask - the result is death from lack of oxygen. Human rights experts had raised the alarm. So far, 23 of the 50 federal states have abolished the death penalty.
