Champions League
Atletico Madrid – Borussia Dortmund from 9pm LIVE
Atletico Madrid celebrated a 2:1 home win against Borussia Dortmund (with Marcel Sabitzer) in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Wednesday.
Atletico got off to an energetic start. After Sabitzer lost possession, Alvaro Morata ran towards the five, but his shot was blocked for a corner. Less than two minutes later, Rodrigo De Paul took the lead after a fatal mistake by Dortmund when playing out. Ian Maatsen virtually laid the ball off to the Argentinian with his outside of his own penalty area, who then had an easy time of it.
From then on, Atletico put the Germans under constant pressure, and BVB looked out of sorts offensively at the Estadio Metropolitano until shortly before the end of the first half. Morata headed over from an Antoine Griezmann corner in the 19th minute, but was unable to get the ball on target from a slight angle. Before making it 2-0, Griezmann provided Samuel Lino with an ideal pass in the 32nd minute and the Brazilian then slotted home unchallenged. This was preceded by another mistake by the Black & Yellows.
Dortmund hit the crossbar
Dortmund improved after the break, but could hardly find a way through the tightly woven net that the hosts had created. One of the few exceptions was the scene before 1:2, when substitute Sebastien Haller was lucky to get to the ball in the penalty area. The striker didn't waste any time after that and gave BVB a better starting position ahead of the second leg in the 81st minute. ÖFB team player Sabitzer was substituted in the 84th minute after a solid performance. A little later, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Julian Brandt hit the crossbar.
Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final first legs:
Paris Saint-Germain - FC Barcelona 2:3 (0:1)
Goals: Dembele (48'), Vitinha (51') and Raphina (37', 62'), Christensen (77')
Atletico Madrid - Borussia Dortmund (with Sabitzer) 2:1 (2:0)
Goals: De Paul (4), Lino (32) and Haller (81)
