Still a Ballon d'Or winner in 2022, little has gone according to plan for Karim Benzema since his move to Al-Ittihad. The Frenchman himself also has to admit that he is no longer the same player he was in his Real days. Is Benzema planning an escape from the desert?
"I'm no longer the same Benzema I was at Real Madrid, because it's not the same game here, not the same players. I need help on the pitch, I need a lot. I can't win games on my own," said the striker, summing up his time in Jeddah so far. The 36-year-old scored his last goal in December, but it is by no means certain that he will stay at Al-Ittihad beyond the summer.
"Let's see what happens in the future. There's new news every day. Let's see," Benzema is keeping a low profile, but an unconditional pledge of allegiance looks different.
Kicked out of the squad
Last summer, the goalscorer moved from Real Madrid to Saudi Arabia on a free transfer. However, things are currently going anything but smoothly for the reigning champions. The club is only fourth in the table, 30 points behind leaders Al-Hilal, and Benzema was even briefly dropped from the squad. Is the adventure in Saudi Arabia coming to an end for the 2022 World Player of the Year?
