No tsunami warning
Earthquake of magnitude 6 shakes Fukushima region
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook north-eastern Japan on Thursday. According to the Japanese Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred in the north-eastern region of Fukushima. A tsunami warning was not issued.
There were no reports of damage or injuries immediately after the earthquake, whose epicenter was at a depth of 40 kilometers and which was also felt in the capital Tokyo.
The US earthquake observatory USGS gave the magnitude of the quake as 6.1 and put the depth at 40.1 kilometers.
Earthquake in Japan
Japan is located in one of the most tectonically active areas in the world and has strict building standards to ensure that buildings can withstand strong quakes. The archipelago with around 125 million inhabitants is hit by around 1500 tremors every year, most of which do not cause any damage.
The previous day, a 7.4-magnitude quake struck Taiwan. At least nine people were killed and more than a thousand injured.
