Know how: What to look out for in a holiday job?
Many young Styrians already have their summer vacation job lined up for the summer vacations. However, many employees are not yet aware of their rights, especially when it comes to their first job. Chamber of Labor expert Linda Handl explains the most important points.
Many school pupils take a holiday job in the summer. The prerequisite is that they have completed compulsory schooling and are 15 years old. In a holiday job, you are fully integrated into the work process, which means that you are obliged to work and are bound to working hours. This meets the criteria of an employment relationship, which must be remunerated accordingly.
Different break regulations for minors
Young people under the age of 18 are generally allowed to work a maximum of eight hours a day and 40 hours five days a week. Minors are entitled to a daily rest break of at least half an hour if the total daily working time is more than four and a half hours. The amount of pay is regulated in the collective agreement.
If there is no collective agreement for an industry, the usual local remuneration, i.e. salary or wage, must be paid. You may also be entitled to a pro rata vacation and Christmas bonus. It is important to keep precise records of working hours in order to be able to check them accurately. There is also a vacation entitlement, which must be paid out at the end of the holiday job if it is not taken.
