DFB Cup
Leverkusen against Düsseldorf from 20.45 LIVE
"Berlin, Berlin, we're going to Berlin!" Bayer Leverkusen follows Kaiserslautern into the DFB Cup final, which will be held in Berlin's Olympic Stadium on May 25. A strong first half with three goals was enough for the "Werkself" against second division side Fortuna Düsseldorf. Florian Wirtz scored a penalty in the second half to complete his brace and make the final score 4:0.
Bayer Leverkusen took a big step closer to winning the national double on Wednesday evening. The superior leaders of the German Bundesliga won the DFB Cup semi-final at home against second division side Fortuna Düsseldorf by a clear 4:0 (3:0). Xabi Alonso's team, unbeaten in 40 competitive matches, will face 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the final on May 25 in Berlin.
The relegation-threatened second division club beat the surprise team from Saarbrücken 2:0 yesterday. In the final duel with the "Red Devils", Leverkusen is the clear favorite to win the cup for the second time in the club's history. The only previous triumph in 1993 was also the last title ever won by the "Werkself".
In the West derby against Fortuna, Leverkusen quickly made things clear. Jeremie Frimpong chased the ball under the crossbar to take the lead (7th). Amine Adli made it 2:0 with a low shot after a counter-attack (20'). Düsseldorf's courage to attack up front was mercilessly punished in the early stages. Alonso's team did not rest on their laurels and youngster Florian Wirtz increased the lead to 3:0 (35') after a mistake by Fortuna goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier.
The second half continued in a similar vein. First Patrik Schick hit the post, shortly afterwards Wirtz scored his first brace for Bayer with a converted penalty (60'). Fortuna, with Austrian Marlon Mustapha in the starting eleven, then limited the damage.
Triple dream lives on
Leverkusen reached the cup final for the fifth time and can even dream of winning the treble. The Alonso side are 13 points clear in the Bundesliga with seven rounds to go and have also reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
