Ermacora/Waller reach semi-finals in Brazil
Beach volleyball players Martin Ermacora/Philipp Waller have reached the semi-finals of the ProTour Challenge tournament in Saquarema. The qualifiers defeated their compatriots Robin Seidl/Moritz Pristauz 2:1 (-19,30,13) on Saturday, and in the quarter-finals they beat the Spanish veterans Pablo Herrera/Adrian Gavira 2:0 (15,12). Their semi-final opponents on Sunday are the Cubans Noslen Diaz/Jorge Alayo, who eliminated Julian Hörl/Alex Horst 2:0 (14,17).
Ermacora/Waller put in a strong second tournament in Brazil after Waller was forced to take a long break. "To come back like this after my lung injury and operation is great. I'm super proud of our performance and now we're looking forward to the finals," said Waller. Ermacora reported on a rollercoaster ride. "First the fight against our former partners and now a dry victory against the old champions from Spain."
Dorina and Ronja Klinger were eliminated in the round of 16. Hörl/Horst took a big step towards the Olympic Games with their fifth place. The top-ranked ÖVV duo can now only theoretically claim a place in the field for the Summer Games in Paris.
