1:2 against WSG Tirol
Things are looking bleak again for Lustenau
After the 1:2 home defeat against WSG Tirol, Austria are now five points behind a non-relegation place. The team played a desolate first 60 minutes in the west derby. The Heraf team woke up at the end, but by then it was already too late.
"Lafnitz, here we come" and similar comments could still be read on the Austria fan forum during the game. Some had apparently already given up hope that Lustenau would still be able to avoid relegation. The fans in the stadium thought differently. They celebrated their team after the final whistle despite the 2:1 defeat.
Too bad: If Lustenau had played the way they did in the last quarter of an hour, the result might have been very different. Trailing 2-0 and a man down, Heraf's men went all-in. However, they were unable to do more than score the equalizer through Yadaly Diaby in stoppage time after a fine individual move. In the end, there was bitter disappointment and the fact that staying in the league is now even more of a "mission impossible". Austria have already "opened up" a gap of five points.
The way Lustenau presented themselves for a long time on Holy Saturday, the team has lost nothing in the league. Their opponents at least showed some semblance of soccer - coach Thomas Silberberger's team's will to win and efforts to score were much more pronounced from the start of the game. Austria, on the other hand, didn't have much to offer apart from kicking the ball away. The early loss of Matthias Maak, who had to leave the pitch after nine minutes due to calf problems, visibly upset the team.
Caught off guard in defense
Heraf's team looked helpless and haphazard - a revelation heading into the 2nd division. A long pass was enough for WSG to take the defense by surprise. Shortly after the break, Boateng was sent off for robbing a goalkeeper, then Meisl fended off the ball with his hand in the penalty area. The penalty - after a VAR check - was safely converted by Buksa. Only then did Lustenau break free from their shackles. Too late.
