Duel awaits on May 1st
St. Pölten and Austria in the final of the Women’s Cup!
Defending champions SKN St. Pölten have narrowly avoided elimination in the semi-finals of the Women's Football Cup! The Wolves defeated Vienna 1-0 at home on Saturday only in extra time and will face Vienna's Austria in the final on May 1. Violett beat runners-up SPG SCR Altach/FFC Vorderland 2:1 (0:1) and celebrated the biggest success in the still young history of women's soccer.
Altach took the lead on schedule in front of their home crowd through Anna Bereuter (22'), but were unable to add to their lead. The evenly matched visitors equalized soon after the restart through Lena Triendl with the active help of Francesca Calo (49') and scored the winner through an own goal by Julia Kofler (75').
Bundesliga leaders St. Pölten, who had only drawn two games in a row in the league recently, were the dominant team against Vienna, but were repeatedly thwarted by their opponents' goalkeeper Christina Schönwetter. Valentina Mädl finally redeemed the hosts in the 106th minute and the path to their tenth cup title in a row remains clear.
The match was interrupted for almost three quarters of an hour after Viennas attacker Julia Kappenberger suffered a shoulder injury following a harmless tackle.
