Police shoot knife attacker, woman injured

Dramatic police operation in Germany: a 46-year-old man has died in the city center of Nienburg in the northern German state of Lower Saxony. A policewoman was also shot and a police dog was injured.

There had been a "threatening situation", a police spokeswoman described vaguely. The man is said to have been armed with a knife. As a result, a major police operation was launched on Saturday morning - during which shots were fired.

A policewoman was hit and taken to hospital by a rescue helicopter. A police service dog was also injured.

The exact circumstances of the incident are unclear. Eyewitnesses report several shots, which can also be heard on videos. According to "Bild", the man from Gambia had previously been rioting in an apartment building.
