Team boss as a B solution
What disadvantage FC Bayern would have with Rangnick
ÖFB team boss Ralf Rangnick is a serious alternative on Bayern's coaching bench. But the German record champions would be at a serious disadvantage if, contrary to expectations, a deal with the 65-year-old were to materialize.
In Munich, other candidates to succeed Tuchel are Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton, who is also said to be on Liverpool's radar, and Rangnick. The 65-year-old, once coach at Stuttgart, Leipzig and Schalke 04, was also named as Plan B by "kicker" on Thursday. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Rangnick was already a candidate at FC Bayern in 2019, who then appointed Hansi Flick as Niko Kovac's successor. After that, the timing was no longer right - and it currently looks like it is.
Schöttel: "Rangnick also wants to go to a World Cup"
Rangnick's contract with the Austrian Football Association runs until at least the end of 2025. In a recent interview with the APA - Austria Press Agency, ÖFB sports director Peter Schöttel said that he was not worried that Rangnick could terminate his contract prematurely, "because I already have the impression that Ralf identifies totally with the team and wants to be as successful as possible with them". Rangnick's goal is to be part of the national team at the finals. "And he definitely wants to go to a World Cup," said Schöttel.
Bayern disadvantage: hardly any preparation time
The signing of a current national team coach, who is represented with his team at the European Championship in Germany, would also have a serious disadvantage for Bayern: Rangnick could be tied down until mid-July if the tournament goes well with Austria - and would not have taken a vacation by then. By this time, however, the new start at the club should already have taken place, leaving a new coach with hardly any preparation time before the start of the season.
Timetable
Antonio Conte and Zinedine Zidane, who are currently without a club, have also been linked with Munich. Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl did not want to commit to a fixed date for the coach search on Sky. "It would be nice if we could do it in April. If it takes a little longer, it will just take a little longer," he said. Eberl did not comment on names.
