Concentration is the main feature of video-on-demand (VoD) usage in Europe: the three services Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ generated 85% of viewing time. This was the result of a study by the European Audiovisual Observatory based on nine EU countries (Austria is not included). Fiction works accounted for 87% and 95% of the viewing time of films and TV seasons respectively.

The report published on Thursday is based on data from Goldmedia's VoD ratings in Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and Spain from September 2022 to September 2023. Overall, consumption patterns are similar in all countries, the Observatory emphasized.

European works accounted for 30 percent of SVoD viewing time, of which 21 percent was attributable to EU works, nine percent to works from the UK and one percent to other European works. SVoD stands for subscription video-on-demand; users access videos via streaming with a monthly or annual subscription.

A comparison of their share in catalogs and their viewing time shows that consumption is systematically higher for US works and lower for European works. European works (films and television content) accounted for 31% of all works in VoD catalogs in 25 EU member states.
