Academy Theater
Claustrophobia in the lonely west
Premiere for "The Lonely West" by Irish playwright, film director, screenwriter and film producer Martin McDonagh at the Vienna Akademietheater. It is the culmination of his remarkable youthful work, which is full of timeless themes: family, guilt and atonement, love, the meaning of life and death. Michael Maertens and Roland Koch shine in the leading roles. Conclusion: perfect theater!
The way Slovenian director MatejaKoležniki knows her business, theater could go on and on. Confined to cramped, claustrophobic stage spaces, her actors also experience the ultimate in freedom. Freedom from video junk and screaming pedagogy, committed only to themselves, their skills and, above all, the text.
And the work of playwright and filmmaker Martin McDonagh has it all: in the most godforsaken Irish backwater, a pair of depraved brothers, welded together in mutual hatred, choke the black out of each other's souls. "The Lonely West" is a brutally funny grotesque and deadly sad chamber play in one. Michael Maertens and Roland Koch deliver a virtuoso performance of the first order, Beckett greets us from afar. Itay Tiran and Lili Winderlich conjure up wondrously poetic points of calm.
