While refueling: man suffers serious burn injuries

An 84-year-old man suffered severe burns while refueling his vehicle in Bad Blumau (Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district) on Tuesday, March 19, after the contents of the fuel canister ignited for unknown reasons.

The 84-year-old from the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district was filling up his car at around 2.35 pm. The man used a canister of fuel stored in his garage for this purpose. For reasons as yet unknown, the fuel ignited during this process. The flames then spread to the man.

Son rushed to help father
The man's son heard his father's cries for help and rushed from the second floor of the house to the entrance area. The 53-year-old was able to extinguish the fire and subsequently set the rescue chain in motion.

Man suffered severe burns
The emergency doctor and the Red Cross arrived shortly after being notified and took over the further treatment of the injured man. The team from the Christophorus 12 emergency helicopter took the patient - who had suffered severe burns - to Graz Regional Hospital. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
