Linz-injured player was taken to hospital by cab in Hungary
The Upper Austrian U20 Academy will never forget this ice hockey season! Not only did they win the red-white-red championship title, they did not receive a trophy for it! The Linzers also had to call a cab themselves during the final series in Hungary to get a seriously injured crack to hospital.
"We played really good, fast and physical ice hockey. The team can be proud of the season," says Christian Kovanecz, assistant coach of the Upper Austrian Ice Hockey Academy's U20 team. But for them the season ended in a strange and bitter way. Not enough that the youngsters from Upper Austria dramatically lost the deciding game in Hungary in a penalty shoot-out and thus the final series of the U20 International League against Ujpest 2:3.
Champions without a trophy
Also bitter: The Upper Austrian cracks, who sensationally defeated Salzburg in the semi-final, do not even receive a trophy for the red-white-red championship title - only the league winners get one! "The title should be honored," criticized Peter Wimmer, the head of young talent in the Upper Austrian association.
At the presidents' conference, OÖEHV boss Christian Ladberg will also address the Austrian association's decision to play overtime instead of shootouts in important games in order to reduce the luck factor. "And above all, that the Hungarians have to ensure proper care for injured players!"
Hungary should punish Hungary
Because when Upper Austrian defender Paul Eder was seriously injured in Final 1, suffering a broken shoulder and torn ligaments, the Upper Austrians had to call a cab themselves to transport the injured player to hospital. Unbelievable! However, Wimmer does not believe that the Hungarians could be fined for this: "Because Ujpest is under the control of the Hungarian association - and they will not impose any punishment on the Hungarians."
