"Make everybody happy"
Trump promises proposal on abortion ban
Donald Trump, who is most likely to run for the office of US President for the Republicans again this year, has taken a stand on the issue of abortion. He spoke out in favor of a nationwide ban on abortion - he said he wanted to make a proposal "soon". However, he does not want to scare off supporters of abortion rights with his proposal.
Trump was interviewed on "Fox News Sunday" about a report in the "New York Times" in February. According to the report, the ex-president had said in a conversation with advisors that he liked the idea of a nationwide ban on abortion from the 16th week of pregnancy, with exceptions after rape or incest or if the health of the pregnant woman is at risk.
Trump told the presenter that he would make a decision on this "very soon". "We can make both sides happy," the Republican said with conviction.
Democrats hope for female votes on the issue
US President Joe Biden and his Democratic Party are hoping to score points with the female electorate in the presidential and congressional elections in November with their commitment to abortion rights. Biden and the Democrats were already able to develop mobilization power with this issue in the congressional elections in November 2022 after the conservative-majority Supreme Court overturned the nationwide right to abortion.
Draconian abortion laws in 20 states
The Supreme Court thus gave the US states the power to determine their own abortion laws. Since then, around 20 states governed by conservative Republicans have enacted draconian laws against abortion. As a result, many women who want to end a pregnancy travel to other states, such as Minnesota, where abortion is permitted.
For Biden's likely re-election opponent Trump, on the other hand, abortion rights are a difficult issue, as they could potentially cost him important votes from female voters. The right-wing populist enjoys strong support among conservative-evangelical groups that vehemently oppose abortion.
