Fair points split
LIVE from 5pm: BW Linz host Austria Lustenau
The clash between FC Blau-Weiß Linz and Austria Lustenau to open the qualifying group in the Bundesliga ended in a draw on Saturday!
The Upper Austrians remain four points ahead of the bottom team from Vorarlberg, who have picked up eight points from the six spring rounds. It was the first point for Blau-Weiß after three recent defeats, and the promoted side are now winless in nine league games.
Match dominated by the relegation battle
The fact that the match was dominated by the relegation battle was particularly evident in the early stages. Both teams were bogged down in duels and there were no footballing highlights.
It was only after a certain amount of time that the teams ventured out of their cover - a shot from Ronivaldo was blocked in the sixteen (13'), while Darijo Grujcic (15'), Ben Bobzien (16') and Yadaly Diaby (20') failed to score against Linz goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid.
Handbrake on
The final phase of the first half belonged to Blue & White, but Simon Seidl was unable to get past Lustenau goalkeeper Domenik Schierl (33'). Julian Gölles also found his master in Schierl (45').
Lustenau had the best chance of the second half - Paterson Chato suddenly found himself alone in the five-man box, but Schmid made the save (63'). The final phase was also played with the handbrake on by both clubs, with the 4300 spectators not seeing any really compelling opportunities - with one exception: a header from Blue & White defender Fabio Strauss missed the goal by just centimetres (89').
The result:
FC Blau-Weiß Linz - SC Austria Lustenau 0:0
Linz, Hofmann Personal Stadion, 4300 spectators, referee Altmann
Yellow cards: Krainz, S. Seidl, Briedl and Chato respectively
Blau-Weiß: N. Schmid - Tursch, Maranda, Fa. Strauss - Gölles (86. Schantl), Krainz, Briedl, Pirkl - Mensah, Ronivaldo (79. Noß), S. Seidl (65. Dobras)
