Branch crashes into kindergarten: one child injured

Great excitement among the little ones in Petzenkirchen in Lower Austria (Melk district): A window was damaged by a tree during preparatory work for an extension. One child had to go to hospital.

A loud bang, suddenly there was broken glass everywhere, the children were running around excitedly: an incident during construction work really upset the daily routine of the kindergarten in Petzenkirchen, a town of 1500 inhabitants. A branch had crashed through a window.

In the commotion, two children's heads collided and one of them suffered a bump. "We advised the parents to go to hospital to be on the safe side. Fortunately, it turned out there that nothing more happened," reports Mayor Lisbeth Kern.

Trees have to make way for an extension
The accident happened during preparatory work for the planned extension to the kindergarten. A number of trees had to be felled to make way for it. A branch probably found its way into the building for unknown reasons. A few weeks later, at least there would no longer have been a child inside. The business is being relocated during the construction work.

The ground-breaking ceremony only took place at the beginning of March. Almost two and a half million euros will be spent to ensure there is enough space for the two-year-olds from September.
