Killed street cat “Eros” moves Turkey
A killed street cat named Eros is currently causing outrage among animal lovers in Turkey. The perpetrator was filmed by surveillance cameras and sentenced to two and a half years in prison on Wednesday. The sentence is not final.
Surveillance cameras show the convicted man stepping on a cat in an elevator in Istanbul and eventually killing it. At this point, he is said to have had psychological and family problems and lost his composure. The act caused a nationwide outcry.
Videos on social networks show numerous observers of the trial chanting that the perpetrator was a murderer in the courthouse. The hashtag "Justice for Eros" trended on the X platform. Numerous users also made threats against the Turk. He could no longer go outside the door, he complained in court on Wednesday.

Not the first verdict
The perpetrator had previously been sentenced to one year and three months in prison. However, the court reduced the sentence to three months shortly afterwards due to good behavior. An appeal was lodged against this, and this is still possible against the new sentence.
The Turkish metropolis of Istanbul is known for its numerous street cats. Violence against them repeatedly makes the headlines. Animal rights activists criticize the lax penalties and lack of enforcement of laws.
