Bosnia: EU Commission recommends accession talks

The EU Commission recommends the opening of accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This was stated by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a speech to the EU Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday. The Western Balkan state had made "impressive steps in our direction".

Foreign and security policy adapted to the EU
Bosnia has adapted its foreign and security policy to the EU. In addition, laws against corruption and money laundering have been introduced. The country had also made great progress in "migration management".

The EU granted Bosnia-Herzegovina candidate status in December 2022. Austria has advocated the opening of EU accession negotiations with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The next step is for the European heads of state and government to discuss the recommendation at their meeting in Brussels next week.
