Rescue aborted
20-meter-long sperm whale stranded off Florida
A sperm whale around 20 meters long has stranded off the Gulf coast of the US state of Florida. The rescue operation was called off after numerous efforts. The animal cannot be helped.
As the police authority responsible for the popular tourist resort of Venice announced on Facebook on Sunday, the animal is still alive but cannot be rescued.
The attempt to administer a tranquilizer to the whale from a boat was deemed too dangerous.
It was last seen about 45 meters from the beach. A police video shows the whale repeatedly raising its fin in shallow water.
Sperm whales
Sperm whales live in all the world's oceans. They can dive to depths of up to 2000 meters in search of food. Large bulls can reach a length of over 20 meters and a weight of around 50 tons.
The Mote Marine Laboratory and members of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are on site.
