Shots fired at Checkpoint Charlie: man dead

A man was shot near Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin on Sunday evening. Rescue attempts failed and the 44-year-old died in hospital. 

The victim was walking along Zimmerstraße in Berlin-Kreuzberg when shots were suddenly fired, police said on Monday. The man was hit several times and collapsed on the sidewalk.

Passers-by alerted the emergency services and the police. The 44-year-old was taken to hospital by ambulance, but resuscitation measures were unsuccessful and the man succumbed to his injuries. A homicide squad took over the investigation.
