Cigarette probably started forest fire on Hungerburg
An embankment fire broke out on the Hungerburg in Innsbruck late on Saturday afternoon. Presumably a discarded cigarette started the fire near the first support of the Seegruben cable car. Several fire departments responded immediately and were fortunately able to prevent the flames from spreading.
Shortly after 5.30 p.m., the sirens blared high above Innsbruck. "An embankment fire has broken out in the area of lift support number one of the Seegrubenbahn", said the police. Due to the strong wind, the fire initially spread rapidly over an area of almost 150 square meters, but was quickly brought under control by the Innsbruck professional fire department and the Hötting volunteer fire department.
No one was injured
After around an hour, the fire was declared out. "The lift support was not damaged by the fire," said the police, who discovered garbage and cigarette remains in the area of the fire during the investigation. "The cause of the fire is therefore likely to have been carelessly discarded cigarette butts," the investigators believe. Fortunately, no one was injured by the fire. Eight fire department vehicles and three police patrols were deployed.
